Step-by-step instructions on adding a CAA record on Hover
Certificate Authorities are now required to check DNS CAA records before issuing SSL certificates. A CAA record simply tells CAs whether or not they’re authorized to issue for a give domain. CAA records are not required for end users, but we recommend taking a minute to set one up anyway.
Here are step-by-step instructions on how to add a CAA record on Hover
How to add a CAA record on Hover
Unfortunately, Hover does not support CAA records at this time. As soon as Hover adds support for DNS CAA records we will update this article with instructions.
On December 2nd, Hover mad the following statement:
We would like to first apologize for the lack of an official response on this request. We recognize its importance for those of you utilizing SSL certificates.
We utilize PowerDNS as our authoritative DNS server. We are currently working on upgrading to PowerDNS 4.x which provides support for CAA records.
PowerDNS 4.x has been in stable release since Q3 of 2016 so we are admittedly lagging behind in completing the upgrade. What’s delaying this upgrade is the clean up of the database prior to move. This will impact all resellers of Tucows Domains so we have opted to only complete the upgrade when we’re absolutely certain there will be no negative impact.
At this time we still cannot provide a firm ETA on when this will be supported. Since the upgrade to 4.x is going to resolve other feature requests as well its certainly in our best interests to complete it ASAP.
In the mean time Peter’s recommendation of utilizing a third-party host for your DNS is the best solution. We always recommend CloudFlare for third-party DNS hosting and so also recommend checking out their services at least until we can support this record ourselves.
Once we have more definitive details to share we’ll certainly provide that update. If any assistance is required in migrating the DNS to a third-party in the mean time our support team will be more than happy to assist with that transition.
